Local representatives, including Doncaster Central MP Sally Jameson, are working to find a viable solution. The city council is in talks with Wabtec leadership to explore potential site options.
Doncaster Officials Seek Solutions for Wabtec Workers
The Doncaster facility specializes in rail component maintenance, handling essential repairs for wheels and carriages. Jameson called this situation another setback following voluntary layoffs in 2020.
If the site closes, Wabtec will complete current contracts before permanently leaving the UK rail maintenance sector. A spokesperson confirmed operations will continue at least until 2026.
An official consultation process will start in the coming weeks. Despite the uncertainty, management remains committed to fulfilling existing customer obligations.
Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones has emphasized the city’s crucial role in railway infrastructure. With over 50 railway-related businesses operating locally, Doncaster remains a significant hub in Britain’s transport industry.
