VIA Rail has reached a tentative agreement with Unifor, avoiding a potential strike and ensuring stability for 2,400 employees across its national operations.

The deal, announced late last week, applies to workers in train service, station operations, maintenance, administration, and customer support. Unifor represents key staff across VIA Rail’s entire network.

Although no agreement was reached by the May 31 reconciliation deadline, negotiations resumed during the 21-day cooling-off period. Continued talks helped avoid a June 22 strike that could have disrupted nationwide rail service.

The new labor agreements will retroactively take effect from January 1, 2024, and remain valid until December 31, 2027. Details will be released once Unifor members ratify the deal.

VIA Rail Moves Quickly to Prevent Service Disruptions

This resolution marks a critical step for VIA Rail as it works to rebuild ridership and modernize operations. Labor peace over the next three years will support long-term service improvements and investment stability.

Unifor credited its bargaining committees and member solidarity for reaching this deal. VIA Rail leadership also emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual respect throughout negotiations.

Both sides expect a successful ratification vote in the coming days. If finalized, the agreement will secure labor peace and set a precedent for similar deals across Canada’s transport sector.

VIA Rail views this outcome as essential for delivering consistent passenger service nationwide. The tentative deal strengthens employee relations and avoids costly disruptions to rail operations.
