Very Light Rail Innovation Centre enters crisis
06.07.2025
The Very Light Rail Innovation Centre in Dudley now faces an uncertain future after its operator entered administration on July 1, 2025. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Role of the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre in UK Transit
The Very Light Rail Innovation Centre operated as a strategic facility under the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation (BCIMO). It supported research and testing for the Coventry Very Light Rail (VLR) project, housing the prototype vehicle until its recent transfer to Coventry for trials. The centre was known for accelerating development in low-cost, low-carbon light rail systems, aimed at transforming urban mobility across the UK.

Because of its national significance, the centre attracted partnerships from engineering firms, universities, and local governments. But BCIMO’s financial collapse has stalled this momentum. RSM UK Restructuring Advisory LLP now oversees the administration process, and so far, no public recovery plan has been shared. Industry leaders, who viewed the centre as critical to sustainable transit goals, have expressed deep concern.
Uncertainty Grows Around the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre’s Future
Without clear direction from administrators or government, the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre’s ongoing projects and jobs hang in the balance. Dozens of innovation programs, including infrastructure trials and technology validation, face indefinite suspension.
And while the Coventry VLR project continues off-site, the future of its original launchpad remains unclear. Neither local authorities nor transport officials have issued statements about potential funding, restructuring, or transition plans.
So, the coming weeks will be pivotal. Stakeholders hope that the centre’s strategic value will prompt urgent action. Until then, Dudley’s flagship light rail innovation facility remains in limbo—its mission paused, but not forgotten.
