Technical evaluation and prospective demand in Uruguay
The technical assistance agreement is worth up to $237,500. The successful bid will be expected to produce studies and proposals that form a public-private roadmap for the development of the sector over the next year.
Key duties will involve analyzing the condition of infrastructure and rolling stock inside and outside corridors; determining operations to meet the demands of freight and passenger traffic; and performing demand forecasts to estimate transportation needs in the 2035-50 time frame.
Opportunities for growth and modernization
Speaking at the First National Forum on Multimodal Freight and Passenger Transport, Transport Minister Lucía Etcheverry said that the plan is a “great opportunity to reposition the rail sector and generate work.
For his part, National Rail Direction Waverley Tejera pointed out that the establishment of the Montevideo–Paso de los Toros stretch had not been taken better advantage of. Now running at less than 50% utilization, this line has more than enough room to increase intermodal logistics and further expand international connections.
