Unifor Workers Vote to Strike Against VIA Rail Canada
27.05.2025
Unionized employees at VIA Rail Canada have voted to authorize a strike, which could disrupt passenger rail services nationwide starting June 22. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Unifor, representing over 2,500 workers, revealed that 97.5% of members supported the strike mandate. The result highlights deep dissatisfaction with stalled labor negotiations.

“This strike vote is not just a number — it’s a direct response to VIA Rail Canada’s refusal to bargain fairly,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Our members are united and prepared to defend public rail service.”
VIA Rail Canada Employees Push for Fair Contract Terms
Council 4000 represents about 1,800 onboard, maintenance, and customer service staff, while Local 100 covers around 700 mechanical and trades workers. Both groups have worked without a contract since December 31, 2024.
Negotiations began in October but made little progress. Talks resumed May 26 under federal conciliation, which ends May 31. A mandatory 21-day cooling-off period will follow before any legal strike.
VIA Rail Canada Faces Potential Disruption in June
Unifor accuses the company of offering subpar terms despite workers maintaining operations under expired contracts. With a strong strike vote behind them, union leaders aim to pressure management back to the table.
If no agreement is reached by the end of the cooling-off period, a national strike could begin on June 22 — right before peak summer travel season.
Federal authorities and travelers alike are monitoring the situation, anticipating potential impacts on rail availability and intercity transportation.
