It is anticipated that the EU grant will help cover the most pressing needs of Ukrzaliznytsia

The European Investment Bank (EIB), the bank of the European Union, and Ukrzaliznytsia have signed a grant agreement in Kyiv for 6.7 million euros to support the company’s operations during the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine, as reported by the railway journal Railway Supply, citing Ukrzaliznytsia.

Ukrzaliznytsia will receive a grant

“The grant was initially intended for the EIB project ‘Modernization of the Ukrainian Railway’ to improve and electrify parts of the railway system in Ukraine. However, due to the war, the needs have changed. According to the decision of the European Commission, the initial grant has been reallocated for urgent emergency support to Ukrzaliznytsia to ensure the continuity of railway operations and meet the urgent needs in passenger transportation and humanitarian aid,” the statement said.

Anton Mishin, a member of the management board of Ukrzaliznytsia, emphasized the importance of EU assistance in supporting the company’s liquidity, restoring the infrastructure damaged by the enemy, and ensuring the stable operation of the railway.

“The railway transport has been critically important for saving Ukrainians, transporting refugees, and delivering goods in the conditions of Russian aggression against Ukraine. We acknowledge the incredible efforts of Ukrzaliznytsia to ensure the effective operation of railway transport in this very challenging time for the country. Cooperation in the transport sector remains a priority for the EU and includes, in particular, the expansion of railway connections between the EU and Ukraine,” said Chloe Allio, Head of the Economic Cooperation, Energy, Infrastructure, and Environment Department at the EU Delegation to Ukraine.

During the signing of the grant agreement, Jean-Erik de Zagon, Head of the European Investment Bank Representation in Ukraine, stated, “Ukrzaliznytsia is a shining example of Ukrainian resilience. Thanks to evacuation trains from active combat zones, millions of people have been saved, and millions of tons of goods and medicines have been delivered to those in need. The EU grant agreement of 6.7 million euros that we signed today will help Ukrzaliznytsia continue its work, adhere to schedules to the maximum extent, and carry out its important tasks. Ukraine and the Ukrainian people can rely on the support of the EIB in the restoration and improvement of critical infrastructure.”

As previously reported, the World Bank will allocate 25 million dollars to Ukrzaliznytsia for the repair of critical infrastructure.
