Ukraine can send part of the cargo traffic to the Baltic ports. It is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply.

Amber Train project

The Minister of Infrastructure met with his Baltic and Polish counterparts to discuss the possibility of creating new transport corridors as Russia blocked Ukrainian ports on the Black and Azov Seas.

“There is a desire, but there are a lot of technical problems that need to be overcome so that Ukrainians can transport the required amount of goods,” said Estonian Minister of Economy Taavi Aas.

We are talking primarily about the export of grain and metal products. To do this, you can use the ports of the Baltic Sea, and deliver goods to them mainly by rail.

However, before that, it is necessary to level out the difficulties with crossing the border by rail and resolve the issue of different track gauges.

“We want to offer Ukraine assistance and, for our part, we are looking at what kind of train can be used to transport Ukrainian goods. In parallel with Latvia and Lithuania, we have recently come close to creating a regular freight transport line called the Amber Train. Ukraine’s desire can speed up this process,” said Raul Toomsalu, Executive Director of Operail.

According to the Minister of Economy of Estonia, it is high time to launch a regular freight train between the three Baltic countries, which, if necessary, could also serve Ukrainian goods.

“Swift action and conclusion of agreements with partners from Latvia and Lithuania is now more important than ever,” the official stressed.

As previously reported, Latvia provided its ports for the export of Ukrainian grain. In addition, they plan to send a test train with Ukrainian agricultural products to Lithuania.
