U.S.-Mexico rail security boosted with advanced CBP and CPKC tech
26.05.2025
U.S.-Mexico rail security will improve significantly as CBP and CPKC implement new scanning systems at the Laredo Rail Port of Entry to protect trade while ensuring inspection speed and efficiency. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) have joined forces to enhance security along the rail freight corridor connecting the U.S. and Mexico. This collaboration focuses on scanning, monitoring, and evaluating cargo using advanced imaging and detection systems.

CBP will operate cutting-edge tools, including the VCISIR 6500 platform, capable of generating detailed X-ray images of railcars. These inspections will detect hidden contraband and radiation threats while maintaining rapid freight movement.
CPKC donation advances U.S.-Mexico rail security goals
In November, CPKC proposed the donation of high-capacity cargo screening technology through CBP’s Donation Acceptance Program. The agency approved the deal in December, making it one of the fastest-processed submissions in the program’s history.
The VCISIR 6500 system includes radiation detection sensors to identify nuclear materials. With its ability to scan through heavy shielding, the platform increases both inspection speed and security assurance along the southern rail corridor.
James Clements, executive vice president at CPKC, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment. “We’re proud to support safe and secure trade with Mexico through this essential investment,” he noted.
New rail corridor tech reshapes U.S.-Mexico border security
Diane J. Sabatino of CBP praised the partnership’s potential. She stated that this cooperation promotes legal rail trade while reinforcing national security efforts at a critical entry point for North American logistics.
By integrating advanced inspection systems and streamlining the cargo process, the U.S.-Mexico rail security initiative sets a new benchmark for international freight movement. The joint project reflects the strategic importance of secure and efficient cross-border rail commerce.
