Tunnel Breakthrough Achieved on Mumbai Metro Line 7A Project
18.04.2025
The Mumbai Metro project achieved a major milestone with the successful 1.65-kilometre tunnel breakthrough on Metro Line 7A between the international airport and Andheri East. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Mumbai Metro Tunnel Milestone Near International Airport
On April 17 in Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) completed the downline tunnel breakthrough on Mumbai Metro Line 7A.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the event by activating the breakthrough mechanism and inspecting the progress on-site.
The tunnel runs between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (T2) and the Airport Colony station. This segment is part of a 3.4-kilometre route, combining 0.94 km of elevated track with 2.5 km of underground tunnels.
The completed tunnel measures 1.65 kilometres and includes 1,180 specially designed pre-cast concrete rings. Engineers used a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that was lowered 30 meters below ground in September 2023. The tunnel’s diameter is 6.35 meters.
Mumbai Metro to Improve Regional Airport Access
Construction teams successfully navigated under key infrastructure, such as Metro Line 3, the Sahar Elevated Road, and essential underground utilities. Despite the complexity, the breakthrough was completed without delays.
Mumbai Metro Line 7A will link Mira-Bhayander and Vasai-Virar to the international airport. Later, connections will extend to Thane and Navi Mumbai International Airports, integrating new routes into the existing metro system.
Currently, 59% of the entire project is complete. The line includes two stations: an underground one at the airport and an elevated station at Airport Colony. The twin tunnels stretch 2.035 kilometres in total, enhancing connectivity across northern suburbs.
Once operational, this corridor will offer seamless transfers to Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ), improving travel between Colaba and the city’s northern edges. The project ensures minimum land use in high-density areas by combining elevated and underground segments.
By advancing this crucial stage, Mumbai Metro moves closer to reshaping the city’s transit landscape and reducing urban congestion.
