Tren Suburbano Expansion and Mexico’s Rail Development Plans
10.08.2025
The Tren Suburbano extension from Felipe Ángeles International Airport to Pachuca advances with new tenders for modern trains, reinforcing Mexico’s broader passenger rail revival strategy across multiple corridors. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Tren Suburbano Extension and Rolling Stock Tender
Mexico’s rail authority ARTF has opened tenders for 15 electric multiple units for the 23 km Tren Suburbano extension from the airport to Pachuca, where construction began in March.

Bidders must design, build, and commission the trainsets, while also providing maintenance services. They will supply ERTMS onboard systems and depot equipment, with at least 50% domestic content required to strengthen local industry.
Each trainset will be around 100 meters long, offering 315 seats and total capacity for over 700 passengers. Designed for accessibility and capable of speeds up to 130 km/h, these trains will modernize regional transport.
Six companies have expressed interest: Alstom, CAF, CRRC ZELC, Mitsubishi Electric de México, civil engineering firm PEA Capital, and TAQ Sistemas Médicos. The contract award is expected in September.
Tren Suburbano and Mexico’s Wider Rail Strategy
The first phase linking Mexico City and the airport is set to open in December, with the Pachuca section planned for early 2027. The double-track line runs alongside an existing freight railway and is electrified at 25 kV 60 Hz.
President Claudia Sheinbaum is also moving forward with long-distance corridors. The 680 km Mexico City–Puebla–Veracruz line will partially use existing freight tracks. Work on the 108 km Querétaro–Irapuato and 396 km Saltillo–Monterrey–Nuevo Laredo routes is scheduled to begin in August.
Later this year, tenders will be issued for 47 electric and hybrid trainsets capable of 200 km/h, with configurations for 300 or 600 passengers. These will serve the Mexico City–Querétaro–Irapuato / Nuevo Laredo corridors.
Sheinbaum’s plan aims to restore 3,000 km of passenger rail within five years, integrating domestic manufacturing, modern technology, and private investment to enhance national connectivity.
