TransPennine Express Launches Greener Electric Train Services in Northern England
03.12.2024
TransPennine Express (TPE) has introduced electric-powered Nova 1 (Class 802) trains between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge. This marks a significant step in TPE’s journey towards greener and more sustainable rail operations. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

First Step for TransPennine Express Electrification
On Sunday, the Nova 1 train utilized the newly installed overhead electric lines, departing Manchester Victoria at 9:45 a.m. for Newcastle. This development stems from vital upgrades made under the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a multi-billion-pound investment aimed at modernizing railway infrastructure across the region.

The electrification of the Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge line represents a major milestone for TRU’s broader goals. TPE now operates a more environmentally friendly service on a significant portion of its network, reducing reliance on diesel engines. This achievement paves the way for future advancements in rail sustainability across the North.
Upgrades Highlight TransPennine Express Commitment
Chris Nutton, Major Projects and TRU Director at TransPennine Express, highlighted the importance of this progress. “The introduction of electric trains on this route offers customers a glimpse into the future of rail travel in the North,” he said. “As we continue to transform key routes, the benefits will only increase for our passengers and the environment.”
This milestone follows extensive improvement work, including a 26-day blockade in 2023 and 2024 for overhead line installations. The upgrades are a direct result of TRU’s commitment to delivering a modern, efficient, and sustainable railway for Northern England.
Ross Ashton, Senior Sponsor for TRU, described the progress as pivotal. “With successful test runs completed earlier this year, we’re thrilled to see electric services becoming a reality,” he said. “These enhancements mark a significant leap towards full electrification across the Pennines.”
Additional upgrades under TRU include line speed improvements at Miles Platting and a new high-speed junction at Stalybridge. The installation of 25 advanced signals also enables closer train spacing, increasing efficiency and capacity on the route.
As part of TRU’s ongoing work, plans are in place to extend electrification across the entire route between Manchester and York. This ambitious project is expected to deliver further benefits for passengers and contribute to a cleaner, greener rail network.
Successful testing between Church Fenton and York earlier this year indicates the project’s steady progress. By 2026, customer services are expected to operate on additional electrified sections, enhancing connectivity and sustainability for communities along the route.
The Nova 1 trains, equipped with bi-mode capabilities, can switch seamlessly between electric and diesel power. This flexibility ensures reliable service while infrastructure upgrades continue. TPE’s commitment to modernizing its fleet underscores its dedication to reducing carbon emissions and improving passenger experiences.
The electrification of key routes aligns with the UK’s broader goals for a sustainable transport future. By investing in projects like TRU, Northern England is setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious rail travel. These initiatives reflect a collaborative effort to meet growing demand while addressing climate challenges.
Passengers can now enjoy quieter, cleaner journeys on TPE’s upgraded services. The transition to electric trains promises long-term benefits for communities, businesses, and the environment. As TRU progresses, more milestones are expected, further transforming the rail network in the North.
TPE’s introduction of electric trains is a testament to the railway’s evolving role in fostering sustainable development. With continued investment and innovation, the future of rail travel in Northern England looks promising. This achievement signals the start of a greener, more efficient era for the region’s transport system.
