TransPennine Express Installs Defibrillators on Trains
05.06.2025
TransPennine Express has completed installing life-saving defibrillators across its 51 Class 185 trains, boosting emergency readiness and onboard passenger safety. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Siemens Mobility handled the installation at the Ardwick Traincare Facility in Manchester. Each defibrillator is stored in an emergency cabinet at the center of the train and is accessible to both crew and passengers.

The device guides users with spoken instructions and automatically analyzes the heart rhythm, delivering a shock if required. This quick action can be critical in saving lives during cardiac arrest.
TransPennine Express Enhances Emergency Response
TransPennine Express says the defibrillators offer vital reassurance to travelers and staff alike. Bushra Khan, Head of Engineering, noted that safety remains a top priority.
“Our customers deserve peace of mind. Knowing this technology is on board ensures we’re ready to act in life-threatening situations,” Khan explained.
Siemens and BHF Support TransPennine Express Upgrade
Siemens Mobility’s team ensured precise and timely delivery of the upgrades. Sambit Banerjee, Joint CEO for the UK & Ireland, praised the technicians at Ardwick for their dedication.
The units were supplied by the British Heart Foundation, the UK’s largest funder of cardiac research. Estelle Stephenson from BHF stressed that early defibrillation significantly increases survival chances.
She added, “With over 30,000 cardiac arrests annually, these devices can mean the difference between life and death. Seconds truly matter.”
The newly installed devices supplement defibrillators already onboard Nova 1 trains. As a result, passengers throughout the network benefit from improved protection during medical emergencies.
By rolling out this life-saving initiative, TransPennine Express has taken a strong step to enhance health preparedness across its fleet. The move reinforces its commitment to safety and public trust.
