Trains in Paris: Alstom Expands RER NG Fleet
09.12.2024
Alstom has announced plans to deliver 35 additional RER NG trains to the Parisian RER E line. This latest order highlights Alstom’s ongoing partnership with Île-de-France Mobilités, the public transport authority overseeing the project. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Modern Solutions for Trains in Paris
The deal, valued at €520 million, will be entirely financed by Île-de-France Mobilités. It follows a 2017 framework agreement between Alstom and SNCF Voyageurs, cementing their collaboration for modern train development.

This new order raises the total number of RER NG trains ordered to 166, including 130 for RER E and 36 for RER D. Alstom has delivered these advanced trains progressively since late 2023, meeting growing passenger demand across the network.
Passenger Comfort and Efficiency on Trains in Paris
Deployment of the RER NG trains on the RER D line is set to begin by late 2024. These trains are engineered to improve passenger experience, operational efficiency, and network reliability.
The trains feature a fully open “boa” design, wide doors, and zones tailored for different passenger needs. They include areas for wheelchair users, ensuring greater accessibility and comfort for all passengers.
Enhanced passenger amenities include air-conditioning, LED lighting, USB ports, improved seating, and multiple information screens. These features aim to provide a seamless and enjoyable travel experience across busy routes.
Operationally, the RER NG trains are equipped with eight motor bogies, boosting acceleration and deceleration capabilities. This design significantly enhances network performance while maintaining energy efficiency.
Each six-car trainset measures 112 meters and accommodates up to 1,563 passengers, including 501 seated travelers. This design prioritizes capacity and comfort for Paris’ growing commuter population.
The RER NG trains are designed and assembled at Alstom’s facilities in Valenciennes-Petite Forêt and Crespin. Additional contributions come from nine other Alstom sites in France, including La Rochelle, Tarbes, and Villeurbanne.
This distributed production model not only supports regional employment but also strengthens France’s industrial expertise in train manufacturing. The project reflects Alstom’s commitment to innovation and local economic development.
Alstom’s collaboration with Île-de-France Mobilités ensures the delivery of cutting-edge transport solutions. The new trains represent a significant milestone in improving mobility across the Île-de-France region.
By introducing the RER NG trains, Alstom continues to set benchmarks in passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and sustainable transport solutions. These efforts align with broader goals to modernize Paris’ transport infrastructure for future needs.
