Train Services Resume After Disruption Caused by Fire Near Cardiff
07.05.2025
Train services between Newport and Cardiff Central have resumed with a revised timetable after a grassfire near the tracks caused major disruptions and damaged critical infrastructure over the weekend. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The fire broke out close to an electrical substation, burning vegetation and severely affecting overhead cables and signalling systems. Emergency teams acted quickly to prevent further damage and restore partial operations.
Train Services Affected by Fire Damage
Several train services experienced delays or cancellations due to the fire. Great Western Railway routes from the West Country, Portsmouth, and London to Cardiff Central were impacted. Services to Bristol, Reading, and Swindon also faced interruptions.

Transport for Wales suspended trains between Cardiff Central and Ebbw Vale. Services to Manchester and Holyhead were also affected, particularly between Shrewsbury, Crewe, and Manchester Piccadilly.
Restoration of Train Services and Ongoing Work
By Tuesday, Network Rail reopened both main and relief lines under a temporary timetable. Work continues on the damaged overhead equipment to ensure full restoration and safe operations across the entire corridor.
Network Rail apologized for the disruption and urged passengers to check the Transport for Wales website for live updates and schedule changes. They emphasized safety and reliability as top priorities during the repair phase.
The disruption highlights the vulnerability of infrastructure to fire hazards and the need for rapid response strategies. Train services are gradually returning to normal as engineers carry out remaining repairs.
Passengers are encouraged to confirm current schedules before traveling to avoid further inconvenience. Updates will remain available through official rail operator platforms.
