Train Collision with Tractor Disrupts Herefordshire Rail Routes
22.05.2025
A train hit a tractor and trailer at a level crossing in Herefordshire, halting services between Manchester and Cardiff and causing significant disruption for passengers. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The crash occurred around 10:45 BST on a rural crossing near Nordan Farm, Leominster. Emergency responders, including air and land ambulances, arrived quickly to treat six people with minor injuries.

Transport for Wales confirmed that the 08:30 train from Manchester Piccadilly struck the vehicle between Ludlow and Leominster. Although the train didn’t derail, rail lines remain blocked, and delays are expected until the end of the day.
Train Services Suspended After Rural Collision
National Rail reported all routes between Hereford and Craven Arms were suspended. Alternative travel options are available, and passengers are urged to check their journey status in advance.
British Transport Police said the tractor was using a farm-only access track and confirmed an ongoing investigation. Emergency vehicles now occupy the narrow rural approach, making access challenging for other traffic.
A Transport for Wales spokeswoman said tickets would be accepted by other operators. Network Rail and emergency crews are currently managing recovery efforts on-site.
Train Safety Under Scrutiny Following Recent Accidents
Last month, investigators cited braking failures in a fatal October 2024 crash involving TfW services between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. One person died, and four others sustained serious injuries.
That accident raised concerns over the safety of single-line operations and rail equipment reliability. The latest collision adds pressure on authorities to enhance level crossing safety, especially in agricultural regions.
Authorities aim to complete a thorough review of this train incident to determine the cause and implement safety improvements. Meanwhile, passengers should prepare for continued delays and diversions across the affected network.
