Toyota Opens Major Vehicle Distribution Center in Czech Republic With Enhanced Rail Connectivity

Toyota Motor Europe has launched a €17m ($18m) distribution hub in Kolín, Czech Republic. This facility streamlines pre-delivery customizations, processing up to 350,000 vehicles annually to improve delivery speed and efficiency for Toyota and Lexus models.

Rail Connectivity Boosts Efficiency and Sustainability at Toyota’s Czech Republic Hub

Increased rail connectivity at the Kolín hub supports Toyota’s sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions. Toyota intends this facility to set a new standard in logistics by enhancing speed and quality in vehicle processing.

The hub’s strategic location at Toyota’s assembly plant in Kolín allows it to serve six markets: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. This centralized location reduces vehicle delivery times significantly, providing faster, customized services for Toyota and Lexus customers.

Jean-Christophe Deville, TME’s vice-president of supply chain, emphasized the milestone for Toyota’s logistics strategy, highlighting the hub’s efficient operations. “This facility ensures best-in-class logistics, delivering vehicles on time, every time,” he stated confidently.

Ceva Logistics, along with partners like CAT Group and STVA, is handling yard operations, pre-delivery inspections, and transport services. Toyota staff manages customization, accessory installations, and overall facility operations, aiming to reduce dealerships’ workloads by handling pre-delivery needs directly at the hub.

A TME spokesperson noted that pre-delivery services minimize the need for dealer interventions. Cars are prepared for immediate handover to the final customer, eliminating delays and enhancing service quality.

Toyota’s approach includes a potential shift toward an agency model, enabling customers to order cars directly from the manufacturer at a fixed price through a virtual showroom. The OEM sets pricing and any associated dealership commission, allowing customers to choose home delivery or a specific dealership location.

How Rail Connectivity Enhances Toyota’s Vehicle Delivery in Central Europe

This model, popular in Europe, reduces distribution costs and enhances customer convenience. The Kolín hub aligns with this vision, furthering Toyota’s commitment to efficient, customer-centric vehicle delivery.

TME’s investment also supports Toyota’s decarbonization goals. The Kolín hub’s rail connectivity facilitates low-emission deliveries, helping meet Toyota’s objectives for sustainability. Since 2022, the company has saved over 4,200 tonnes of carbon emissions per year by using existing rail routes between its facilities in the Czech Republic, France, and the UK.

A new rail connection to Poland will contribute further, potentially reducing emissions by an additional 1,100 tonnes annually. Toyota’s commitment to green logistics is clear, reinforcing its dedication to environmental responsibility.

European rail freight disruptions, especially in Germany, pose challenges. Toyota is mitigating these issues by leveraging alternative logistics solutions like spot trains and shortsea vessel services for UK-bound vehicles, along with additional rail wagon orders.

Dr. Robert Kiml, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic, praised the facility’s role in fostering local innovation and economic growth. “This investment enhances our efficiency and supports our sustainability goals, providing value to both customers and the community,” he affirmed.
