The New Bullet Train Revolutionizes Travel Across Japan
01.12.2024
A groundbreaking train line extension costing £27.5 billion recently launched in Japan, significantly improving travel times. This ambitious infrastructure project, part of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, promises transformative benefits for commuters and tourists alike. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Faster Travel Times with the New Bullet Train
The new bullet train route reduces the journey from Tokyo to Fukui prefecture from three and a half hours to under three. Additionally, it shortens trips from Osaka, Kyoto, and Nagoya to both Fukui and Kanazawa by 15 to 20 minutes.

Fukui prefecture, known for its historic attractions and cultural heritage, is now more accessible than ever. Visitors can explore Echizen pottery workshops, Eiheiji Temple, and Maruoka Castle—one of Japan’s oldest and most picturesque fortifications.
Economic Benefits of the New Bullet Train
Construction of this ambitious project began in 2019, with extensive test runs conducted in September 2023. Commercial services officially launched on March 16, 2024, offering direct routes between Tokyo and Tsuruga.
Fourteen direct daily services now connect Tokyo to Tsuruga, while an additional 25 trains serve all intermediate stations. Travelers can purchase unreserved tickets for ¥82.36 (15,830 JPY) or reserve seats for £85.12 (16,360 JPY). First-class passengers pay £125.99 (24,210 JPY).
The new service is projected to attract an average of 6,300 passengers daily, up from the previous average of 5,300. Officials anticipate this increase will significantly boost regional tourism and economic activity.
This expansion represents one phase of a larger plan to extend Hokuriku Shinkansen tracks to Osaka. However, the project’s cost has skyrocketed, with total estimates reaching £27.5 billion (5.3 trillion JPY).
Originally projected at £10.3 billion (2.1 trillion JPY), the budget has more than doubled due to unforeseen challenges. Despite the financial hurdles, officials remain optimistic about the project’s long-term benefits.
Japan’s reputation for cutting-edge infrastructure and efficient transportation is further solidified by this impressive accomplishment. By linking key cities and reducing travel times, the new train line enhances convenience and connectivity across the region.
