The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) plans to manufacture not only freight wagons but also railroad carts
03.04.2024
The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has shared its plans to reprofile the Wartsila plant in Trieste, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
While previously focusing on producing freight wagons, the company now intends to manufacture railroad carts as well.
Zephir shunting locomotives will replace shunting diesel locomotives at the Celsa Steel steelworks
This move comes after MSC acquired the Wartsila plant in Trieste, which was formerly specialized in ship diesel engine production.
According to MSC’s plans, the annual production volume of carts will be 3000 units.
This strategic move by MSC is part of their business diversification strategy.
In addition to container shipping, the company will now be involved in manufacturing railroad rolling stock.
This could bring additional revenue and expand the company’s influence in the transportation industry.
Such a transition could also have a positive impact on the region’s economy.
Creating new jobs and developing the industrial sector in Trieste contributes to the growth of the local economy and the improvement of living standards.
However, the question of competition with existing railroad equipment manufacturers remains open.
MSC’s competitive advantage in this area is currently unclear, and the success of this new business direction will depend on various factors, including product quality, price competitiveness, and market demand.
