This 57-kilometer tunnel plays a key role between Switzerland and its neighbors, reducing travel time to two hours between Zurich and Lugano.

Following the collapse in August 2023, when a freight train derailed due to a railway wheel defect, SBB immediately began restoration work.

Currently, testing and adjustment of systems necessary for safe and efficient tunnel operation are underway.

Test runs are already being conducted to verify new systems, including tracks and overall infrastructure functionality.

In preparation for full launch, SBB is finalizing documentation for the Federal Office of Transport, confirming the safety and readiness of all systems for full operation.

Regular maintenance work will continue to keep the tunnel in pristine condition and prevent potential incidents.

It is expected that new safety measures, including possibly installing derailment sensors, will be implemented in the medium term to enhance operational reliability.

Despite the estimated material damage of 150 million Swiss francs, SBB is actively working to minimize consequences and prepare for the full restoration of transport services in the Gotthard Base Tunnel by this autumn.
