The City of Columbia Secures $204 Million for Railroad Separation Project

The city of Columbia has secured $204 million in federal funding for a key infrastructure project. The Assembly Street Railroad Separation Project promises to reduce congestion and improve connectivity. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The City of Columbia Plans Infrastructure Transformation
This $204M investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law covers most project costs, estimated at $275M-$300M. Remaining funds will come from local and state resources, including Richland County.
Key Highlights of the Project:
1.Alternative A will lower Assembly Street by 18 feet, build rail bridges, and maintain existing access for industry.
2.Alternative A-1 suggests abandoning parts of CSX lines, while keeping key segments functional for industry.
3.Alternative B proposes elevated roads, ensuring minimal changes to railways and maintaining pedestrian pathways.
Timeline and Benefits
A design option will be finalized by January, with an environmental assessment in April and a NEPA decision by May or June. Construction, lasting 18-24 months, promises long-term economic and connectivity benefits for Columbia.
Residents are encouraged to participate in planning discussions, ensuring the project aligns with local priorities. This effort reflects Columbia’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development in infrastructure.
