The carrier RegioJet is withdrawing carriages that could have caused the accident
10.06.2024
The Czech private railway operator, RegioJet, is taking out of service all 13 Austrian-type sleeping carriages it owns, according to Railway Supply news portal, citing Radio Prague International.
The decision comes after structural flaws were found following the accident in Pardubice on June 6 and a previous accident in Austria.
The carrier noted that in the Pardubice accident, a RegioJet express collided with a ČD Cargo freight train.
Two Slovakian citizens and two Ukrainian citizens died, with 27 others injured.
“We have found that a similar ÖBB sleeping carriage from the same manufacturer was damaged in the same way in an accident in 2018 in Salzburg, meaning the frame between the first and second compartments was destroyed. The frame fracture led to the carriage’s damage in the Pardubice accident and, consequently, resulted in fatalities. In this regard, Regiojet has decided to take all 13 carriages out of service, even though they are identical carriages operated by other companies,” the company said.
The withdrawn RegioJet carriages will be replaced with others.
