The reconstruction includes full modernization and electrification of the line linking the port of Durres on the Adriatic coast with the city of Rrogozhina. This section is a key part of the TEN-T Corridor VIII, which connects over 1,270 km of railways and 960 km of roads between Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, and Italy.
TEN-T: EU Requirements and Long-Term Plans
In early 2024, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU tightened requirements for the development of TEN-T infrastructure. Member states must accelerate the construction of multimodal terminals and implement advanced technologies to increase capacity.
According to the plan, the core TEN-T network is to be completed by 2030, the extended core network by 2040, and the entire system by 2050. For Albania, the Durres — Rrogozhina project is a crucial step toward integration into the European transport system and boosting both freight and passenger flows.
