Tanzania Railways Corporation has officially launched electric freight train operations on its Standard Gauge Railway between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma

The electric service aims to improve logistics speed and cut emissions, linking the coastal port to the capital through efficient rail transport. Earlier this year, Tanzania Railways Corporation completed trial runs using 264 cargo wagons manufactured in China.

The first commercial freight train departed Pugu Station in Dar es Salaam at 4:35 a.m., carrying over 700 tonnes of goods in 10 wagons. It was scheduled to arrive at Ihumwa Station in Dodoma by 2 p.m. the same day.

TRC officials urged traders, institutions, and logistics providers to adopt the electric service. They highlighted its reliability, speed, and cost-effectiveness for businesses across multiple sectors.

Tanzania Railways Corporation expands cargo capabilities

Out of the 264 freight wagons, 200 are designed for container shipping. The remaining 64 are configured to carry bulk or loose goods. This combination offers flexibility in transporting various commodities.

By replacing long-haul trucking with electric trains, the corporation aims to reduce road congestion and lower the country’s logistics costs. It also aligns with national efforts to modernize infrastructure and support economic growth.

Tanzania Railways Corporation supports trade and sustainability

This freight initiative marks a major step toward sustainable transport. The electric system consumes less energy per ton and significantly cuts carbon emissions compared to diesel-powered alternatives.

Officials believe this development will strengthen Tanzania’s role as a trade gateway in East Africa. It’s also expected to improve delivery times and reduce risks tied to road cargo.

Tanzania Railways Corporation continues to position itself as a logistics leader by combining technology, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Businesses now have faster and greener options to move cargo across regions.
