The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) confirmed its readiness to begin operations after two trials were completed on June 1 and 2 between Dar and Ihumwa. The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) certified the test runs and gave the green light for cargo services.

According to Enock Mgonja, TRC’s Maintenance Manager for Passenger and Freight Wagons, the approval means Tanzania can now operate freight trains along this vital corridor without delay.

Tanzania Deploys Chinese-Built Wagons and Logistics Hubs

Cargo will be loaded and offloaded at key SGR stations including Pugu, Morogoro, and Ihumwa. Dar es Salaam Port will serve as the central logistics hub, linking rail freight to maritime trade.

To support the new route, Tanzania is using part of a 1,430-unit shipment of Chinese-built wagons. These railcars aim to reduce transport costs, improve efficiency, and enhance cross-border logistics capacity.

Tanzania Eyes Regional Expansion Through Modern Rail

The SGR replaces aging metre-gauge tracks and forms a critical part of Tanzania’s transport infrastructure strategy. The Dar–Dodoma segment is the backbone of a future line that will extend to Mwanza and regional borders.

Although the Tanzania Truck Owners Association (TATOA) initially had concerns, it now supports the project. TATOA Chair Elias Lukumay said trains will handle bulk cargo, while trucks will complete last-mile deliveries.

He emphasized that many shipments arriving at Dar es Salaam Port are bound for neighboring countries. So, combining rail and road transport will improve delivery timelines and reduce road congestion.

By operationalizing the SGR freight service, Tanzania strengthens its logistics sector and positions itself as a regional transport hub. This development supports national economic growth and enhances East Africa’s trade routes.
