Tamil Nadu trains will add new stoppages from August 18, giving passengers better regional access, because the Indian government approved public requests to improve service and expand connectivity across key routes. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Union Minister L. Murugan confirmed that 38 services will provide extra halts. Residents had submitted petitions, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approved the plan, ensuring faster access for commuters in smaller towns and regional hubs.

Meanwhile, the Coimbatore–Nagercoil Express gains Irugur, Singanallur, and Melappalayam. The Puducherry–Kanniyakumari Express includes Valliyur, giving passengers more flexibility.
Tamil Nadu trains backed by major government investment
Murugan highlighted that the federal government invested about $120 billion in Tamil Nadu over the past decade, funding highways, ports, airports, and railways. For 2025–26 alone, $79.5 billion is allocated to railway projects, compared with just $10.6 billion during 2009–2014.
The Amrit Bharat Railway Stations Scheme supports redevelopment of 77 stations at a cost of $35.4 billion. Chennai Egmore’s $9.6 billion modernization is underway, while works in Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Katpadi, and Salem progress quickly.
Track upgrades are also advancing. Construction spans 2,587 kilometers of new lines worth $401 billion, including ten new routes, three broad-gauge lines, and nine double-track corridors. In parallel, the Maduravoyal–Chennai Harbour elevated project is moving ahead at full speed.
By linking new stoppages with large-scale upgrades, the government aims to shorten travel times, expand capacity, and provide a reliable, modern transport system for millions of passengers.
