Each train carries 120 railcars equipped with large 9.6 MWh batteries capable of delivering 1.15 GWh. This energy is enough to meet the daily needs of over 120,000 households.

SunTrain’s Technology and Grid-Connected Solutions

The company has successfully tested its technology with a 750 KWh train car transported across 6,500 miles. SunTrain plans to scale operations with a 384 MWh pilot project involving 20 railcars, which will support grid stability.

Christopher D. Smith, CTO of SunTrain, emphasized their reliance on 100,000 miles of existing U.S. rail networks. This innovative system accelerates decarbonization and reduces reliance on traditional energy sources.

SunTrain’s technology centers on efficient charging and discharging systems that ensure trains deliver grid-ready energy seamlessly. The company maintains a competitive LCOE of $60/MWh, enabling profitable operations in fluctuating energy markets.

By transporting renewable energy through battery-powered trains, SunTrain provides a scalable solution for reducing emissions. This pioneering approach highlights the future of sustainable energy transport in the United States.
