Metra’s Investment in Battery-Powered Trains
Metra has placed a $154 million order for eight two-car battery-powered trains to modernize its fleet. These trainsets will be among the first fully electric passenger rail vehicles in the United States.

Each two-car set will accommodate 112 passengers, while additional trailer cars will offer 46 extra seats. Features will include low-level boarding, lifts, digital displays, bike racks, and USB charging ports.
A fully charged trainset will cover 45 to 50 miles on a single charge. A fast-charging system will allow recharging from 20 to 80 percent within 20 to 30 minutes.
STV’s Role in Sustainable Transit Development
Austin Longshore, STV’s Senior Engineer and Project Manager, highlighted the company’s expertise in zero-emission transit. He emphasized STV’s expanding role in engineering solutions for both rail and bus transportation.
Longshore expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Metra on this pioneering project. He noted that these trainsets will be among the first in the country to utilize all-electric technology.
STV has previously supported major zero-emission transit projects across North America. The firm has worked with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority and designed Massachusetts’ electric bus maintenance facility.
Additionally, STV has contributed to dual-powered locomotive projects for NJ TRANSIT and MTA Metro-North Railroad. These projects demonstrate STV’s growing role in sustainable transportation initiatives.
This partnership with Metra represents progress toward reducing emissions in public transit. It aligns with broader efforts to transition toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation systems.
