29.05.2025
Stannah has enhanced accessibility at seven Network Rail Stations by installing 13 new passenger lifts, ensuring step-free access along the Wessex route through a £350 million improvement initiative. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This work forms part of the Department for Transport’s “Access for All” program and involves collaboration between South Western Railway, Network Rail, and local government partners to improve station infrastructure.

Modern Lift Solutions at Network Rail Stations
Stannah collaborated with principal contractor Octavius to deliver upgrades at Motspur Park, Barnes, Walton-on-Thames, Isleworth, and Stoneleigh. These sites now feature durable, stainless-steel lifts with secure rubber bumper rails.
Each lift follows Network Rail’s standard specifications and supports safe travel for passengers and goods. The upgrades particularly benefit commuters with limited mobility, luggage, or young children in strollers.
Stannah’s Major Projects division managed the installations. This unit specializes in long-term and technically complex infrastructure work, often involving heritage locations or public transport hubs.
Accessibility Progress Across the Wessex Route
At Isleworth, the new lifts align with the Hounslow Council’s vision of step-free access at all stations. Peter Williams, South Western Railway’s Customer and Commercial Director, praised the positive impact on local communities.
Five of the seven upgraded Network Rail Stations are now fully accessible, encouraging greater use of public transportation and reducing reliance on cars. These changes align with London’s wider goals for inclusive urban mobility.
With more than 1,800 units under maintenance nationwide, Stannah continues supporting Network Rail through its national service contract. These new installations now join the company’s extensive portfolio of over 100,000 lifts and escalators.
Pete Ford, Project Manager at Stannah, highlighted the teamwork involved. He said the collaboration with Octavius brought meaningful change and reaffirmed Stannah’s role in transforming travel across the UK.
By improving station access, Network Rail and its partners foster inclusive and sustainable transport. These upgrades make rail journeys easier for everyone, while promoting a more connected and accessible city for the future.
