Speed record marks new milestone for Czech railways

České dráhy has indeed revealed that the Pendolino high-speed trains are currently running at 200 km/h, breaking the long-established barrier of 160 km/h. CEO Michal Krapinec highlighted the fact that the fleet has the technical capability to hit 230 km/h in future services.

Travelers now reach České Budějovice in 95 minutes, the return journey taking five minutes less. Through the assistance of tilting technology, the trains travel faster on curves, particularly on the upgraded sections between Votice and Sudoměřice and between Doubí and Soběslav.

Infrastructure upgrades enable speed record achievement

From the Ministry of Transport, the modernization of the Prague–České Budějovice line is a significant breakthrough. Minister Martin Kupka said less journey time and improved travel conditions open the prospect for future high-speed connections at up to 320 km/h.

Railway Administration director Jiří Svoboda also said future tunnel construction between Nemanice and Ševětín will reduce travel times even further. In the meantime, the longer Pendolino service now links eastern regions with southern Bohemia, enhancing nationwide access.

Furthermore, České dráhy has six operational Pendolino trainsets, manufactured by Alstom. With first-class accommodations, ramps for wheelchairs, as well as rooms for bicycles, the seven-car units contain all that is required for high-speed operation. They have 16 powered axles with 4,000 kW output.

What is České dráhy’s new speed record?

České dráhy established a record speed of 200 km/h on the line Praha–České Budějovice, the first occasion on which this pace had been attained during scheduled passenger traffic.

How has the faster Pendolino train benefited the passengers?

Travel times to České Budějovice have been reduced to 95 minutes, with greater comfort through tilting rail technology, modernized infrastructure, and smoother high-speed connections along the southern corridor.

Are there future plans for high-speed rail in Czech?

Plans to extend the operation up to 320 km/h on future high-speed corridors with the help of new tunnels, upgraded tracks, and next-generation trains such as ComfortJet and advanced Vectron locomotives.
