On March 31, project stakeholders, including local authorities and landowners, reviewed critical construction calculations during a key meeting. Experts highlighted the initiative’s potential to boost passenger traffic, safety, and reliability significantly.

The technical feasibility study for this upgrade will conclude in the first half of 2025, RFI confirmed. This timeline ensures thorough preparation, so the project meets regional goals effectively.

A survey conducted in summer 2023 revealed that 79% of respondents strongly support adding a second track here. Then, in February 2025, local business leaders and officials endorsed it overwhelmingly.

The historic Bolzano-Merano line, launched in 1881, originally served as a convenient route to Merano’s spa resort. Today, only two train pairs run hourly, but upgrades promise more.

South Tyrol Railway Doubles Capacity

After completion, the line will double its hourly train frequency from two to four pairs, experts predict. Additionally, travel time will drop from 38 minutes to just 26 minutes.

This upgrade responds to growing demand for reliable public transport in the region, authorities emphasized. Moreover, it strengthens connectivity to Merano, supporting sustainable tourism growth.

Local leaders actively back the project because it promises economic benefits alongside better infrastructure. The second track will ease congestion, so trains operate smoothly with rising demand.

RFI and Italferr prioritize safety in their redesign, incorporating advanced technology for enhanced reliability. Consequently, the railway will meet modern standards, benefiting residents with faster travel options.

South Tyrol Railway Enhances Safety

Construction timelines remain on track, with officials coordinating closely to secure funding and finalize permits. Meanwhile, community engagement continues, ensuring the project reflects local priorities accurately.

The Bolzano-Merano transformation marks a significant step for the region’s transport network, analysts noted. Ultimately, this initiative delivers a dependable line, boosting tourism and commuting efficiency.

With strong public support and clear benefits, the South Tyrol railway advances steadily toward its 2025 milestone. Thus, the region prepares for a future of efficient rail travel prosperity.
