The electric commuter service, operated by NICTD, connects downtown Chicago with South Bend. The new station lies at the core of the Double Track Northwest Indiana project, launched to expand service reliability and capacity.

New Transit Infrastructure Boosts Michigan City Accessibility
This development is a result of cooperation between South Shore Line, Michigan City, and Flaherty & Collins Properties. Together, they’ve transformed the transit corridor into an anchor for future economic and urban growth.
Inside the new station, travelers can access climate-controlled seating, vendor spaces, and public restrooms. The building also features an exhibit on the South Shore Line’s heritage, along with an interactive model train display.
To improve accessibility, the site includes a 542-space garage, with 437 priority spots reserved for NICTD passengers during peak hours. Officials expect this structure to reduce car traffic and attract more rail users.
Public-Private Partnership Spurs Growth in Michigan City
Although platforms at 11th Street became active earlier in 2024, the station building and garage were only completed this week. This finalization marks a milestone for the long-planned Double Track initiative.
The project has received funding from the Federal Transit Administration, the State of Indiana, NICTD, local communities, and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Commission. Planning began in 2016 and continued through years of coordination and phased construction.
With its strategic location, the new hub is expected to serve both residents and visitors efficiently. Officials believe the investment will strengthen the area’s economy while delivering faster, more reliable rail options.
The launch of this major infrastructure upgrade signals renewed momentum in regional transportation planning. Leaders say it will reshape mobility and development across northwest Indiana.
