South Phoenix Launches Light Rail to Connect Communities
08.06.2025
South Phoenix opened a major light rail expansion, connecting neighborhoods and delivering long-awaited public transit access through more than five miles of new Valley Metro rail service. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

More than 1,000 residents gathered at the Central and Baseline station for the launch event, celebrating the project’s completion after years of construction and disruption. Many brought handmade signs honoring relatives in the transit workforce.

Lindsay, a local resident, held a sign for her aunt, a light rail operator since the system began 25 years ago. She believes the upgrade will serve both commuters and businesses across the area.
“This project delivers long-overdue access to South Phoenix,” Lindsay said. “Now people from here can reach downtown more easily, and others can finally visit our part of the city.”
However, not everyone reflected on the expansion with enthusiasm. Monica, another resident, voiced frustration over the prolonged construction that often limited mobility and access to stores.
South Phoenix Community Rebounds After Disruptions
Construction-related street closures significantly hurt local businesses. Congressman Greg Stanton acknowledged the setbacks but emphasized the project’s long-term gains for the district.
“They had to endure a difficult process,” Stanton said. “But the payoff is clear—better mobility, more visitors, and a stronger local economy for South Phoenix.”
Valley Metro estimates the expansion will attract over 8,000 new daily riders, boosting both usage and regional connections.
South Phoenix Looks Ahead to Further Light Rail Growth
Mayor Kate Gallego affirmed Phoenix’s commitment to continued development. She noted strong interest from residents in other underserved areas, especially on the city’s west side.
“Today is a moment to celebrate,” Gallego said. “But we’re already looking toward the next phase of the light rail project.”
With this expansion complete, the community stands better connected, more mobile, and ready for future investment and development.
