South Eastern Railway received over 30,000 job applications last year compared to 14,000 previously, marking rapid employment growth and reinforcing its role as a leading transport employer in the UK. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The operator currently employs 4,500 staff, while the combined track-and-train workforce under its streamlined structure with Network Rail’s Kent route totals around 6,000 employees.

South Eastern Railway Focuses on Skills and Careers

Managing Director Steve White highlighted the importance of the rail sector in driving economic opportunity and social mobility. He noted that the new centre will support new recruits, retraining staff, and experienced workers seeking career growth.

The company has already supported over 500 apprentices and climbed 34 places in the Sunday Times Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, ranking 24th this year—the highest position among UK rail operators.

South Eastern Railway Honors Diversity and Equality

The new facility also pays tribute to industry pioneers. One room is named after Barbara Ann Denny, the first female driver on the South Eastern network in 1978. Another honors Asquith Xavier, a campaigner for racial equality in transport.

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy praised the initiative, emphasizing the value of training programs for school leavers, career changers, and veterans. He stressed that inclusive opportunities strengthen the rail industry and benefit local communities.

With record applications and expanded training, South Eastern Railway is positioning itself as a model for modern transport employers, focusing on diversity, career development, and future-ready skills to meet growing industry demands.
