South East Central Railway Expands Electrification for Sustainable Transport
02.02.2025
South East Central Railway continues to modernize railway operations, achieving a significant electrification milestone. With 6,900.93 track kilometers now electrified, the network moves towards greater energy efficiency and sustainability. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

South East Central Railway’s Electrification Milestone
Since its establishment on April 1, 2003, South East Central Railway has prioritized modernization. Its electrification projects focus on energy efficiency, reducing carbon footprints, and advancing railway sustainability.

Electrification progressed rapidly across SECR’s key divisions, including Bilaspur, Raipur, and Nagpur. These efforts enhance railway efficiency and significantly cut down operational costs for freight transport.
The first electrification in this railway zone began on January 19, 1970, in the Jharsuguda-Raigarh section. This early step laid the groundwork for future railway infrastructure advancements across SECR.
SECR introduced the 2×25 kV AT-AEC-BEC traction system, improving train efficiency and reliability. This modern system was launched on December 14, 2024, in the Bhanupratappur-Antagarh section.
Additionally, the first twin EF-12K three-phase electric locomotive was commissioned on November 26, 2023, in Bhilai. This innovation marks another leap toward railway electrification and technological progress.
Green Energy and Economic Impact of South East Central Railway
Electrification significantly increased SECR’s electrical energy consumption, reaching 1,859.19 million units in 2023-24. This shift reduced reliance on fossil fuels, advancing India’s transition to sustainable transport.
The newly electrified railway lines enhanced coal, iron, and freight transportation, boosting industrial production. These advancements strengthen economic growth and ensure more efficient logistics operations.
SECR remains committed to integrating renewable energy into railway operations while expanding electrified routes. These efforts align with India’s long-term goals for a greener, more efficient transport system.
To commemorate 100 years of Indian Railways’ electric journey, a three-phase electric locomotive will run in the Bhanupratappur-Antagarh section on February 3, 2025.
This electrification drive plays a crucial role in Indian Railways’ zero-carbon emissions goal. These initiatives will significantly impact both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Major electrification projects include Bilaspur-Anuppur-Katni (1992-95), Gondia-Ballarshah (2017-18), and Raipur-Naya Raipur (2019-23). The Bhanupratappur-Antagarh-Taroki electrification project (2024-25) remains a top priority.
These ongoing efforts reinforce SECR’s leadership in advancing railway modernization and sustainable energy solutions.
