The decision propels the project into its next phase—preliminary engineering and final environmental review—setting the direction for upcoming technical and design work.

While not a final commitment, the choice reflects the agency’s intent before the full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), expected in 2027. The final route decision will follow that publication.

Sound Transit reviewed feedback from local communities, government agencies, and tribal representatives, particularly the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, whose land includes two station sites.

The agency emphasized that coordination with the tribe will continue throughout planning and construction to respect cultural and land-use concerns.

Sound Transit Coordination with Stakeholders Shapes the Project

Community input influenced route decisions, and board members incorporated insights from the draft EIS and public forums. These contributions helped refine route alignment and station accessibility.

Chair Dave Somers noted that the board’s decision brings the agency closer to connecting all three counties in the transit district with light-rail service.

Sound Transit Budget and Timeline for Completion

The Tacoma Dome Link Extension is projected to cost $4.63 billion, with an operational launch targeted for 2035. The investment is expected to enhance mobility and boost regional economic development.

Planning now shifts toward engineering designs and environmental compliance. The agency also plans to maintain transparent communication with communities and stakeholders during every step.

With this milestone, Sound Transit solidifies its role in delivering regional rail infrastructure that aligns with voter expectations and future transportation needs.
