SEPTA service cuts impacting travel

Starting August 24, SEPTA will reduce services across regional rail and bus routes because of a $213 million budget shortfall. Riders in Bucks County face the largest disruptions, as key bus routes and the Trenton Line disappear.

Fans heading to Phillies games will also experience delays. The agency plans to eliminate the Sports Express trains, which normally provide extra capacity on game days. So, passengers should prepare for longer waits and crowded cars during events.

SEPTA fare hikes and future adjustments

On September 1, SEPTA will raise fares to help balance the budget. Bus and metro fares will rise from $2.50 to $2.90, while regional rail fares will climb by 21.5 percent. Commuters already stretched by reduced schedules will now pay more for fewer options.

Service cuts will continue through early 2026. SEPTA expects to permanently shut down five regional rail lines and 18 bus routes by January. These reductions could push more commuters toward carpooling, ridesharing, or personal vehicles, further increasing traffic congestion.

Because these changes affect nearly every route, SEPTA advises passengers to check schedules frequently and plan alternate travel options. Riders heading to major events like Phillies games should leave early to avoid delays and missed connections.

Local officials, including Governor Josh Shapiro, are urging state lawmakers to secure additional transit funding. But until solutions emerge, passengers will need to adapt to a leaner, more expensive transit system.
