Seattle Link Extension Enters Full Design and Engineering Phase
03.05.2025
Seattle Link extension has received federal environmental approval, allowing Sound Transit to start the detailed design and engineering phase for the 4.1-mile light-rail expansion toward West Seattle. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Voters originally approved the Seattle Link project in 2016, and Sound Transit began initial planning the following year. Since then, the agency has worked to evaluate impacts, consult communities, and prepare environmental reports.

In October 2024, the board selected the final route and station locations after public input and technical analysis. With this latest milestone from the Federal Transit Administration, Sound Transit will now focus on infrastructure design.
Seattle Link Extension to Improve Urban Transit Connectivity
This phase includes mapping track alignments, finalizing station architecture, and ensuring integration with the existing regional rail system. Engineers will develop construction strategies while ensuring that environmental standards and community concerns remain central to the process.
Officials say the Seattle Link expansion will accommodate over 24,000 daily riders. It will offer direct access between West Seattle, downtown, the Eastside, and the airport, easing traffic and reducing emissions.
Next Steps for Seattle Link Project and Community Impact
The agency will now refine construction timelines, budgets, and technical plans. These efforts aim to ensure smooth implementation once the project enters the building phase.
The Seattle Link project represents a long-term investment in sustainable, reliable transportation. Sound Transit emphasized its commitment to delivering services that benefit both commuters and the city’s long-term growth.
With the design phase underway, Seattle is moving closer to a future of enhanced public transit access across its expanding light-rail network.
