In a formal letter to LA Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins, Sean Duffy requested a detailed plan by July 10. He wants full disclosure on how the agency will tackle fare evasion, ensure safety, and maintain system cleanliness.

Sean Duffy Demands Transit Crime and Safety Plan

He asked for financial documentation outlining FY2025 and FY2026 security budgets, comparing them to previous years. Duffy warned that failure to comply may result in suspended or redirected federal transit funding.

On the same day, LA Metro staff updated their board on procedures for handling transit interruptions during civil unrest. The report included guidance on rerouting buses, closing rail stations, and working with agencies such as ICE.

LA Metro also outlined how it communicates with riders during demonstrations. The agency said it prioritizes real-time updates and law enforcement coordination to minimize commuter confusion and delay.

Sean Duffy Criticizes Bass Over Protest Fallout

Separately, Duffy sent a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. He condemned what he described as “violent riots” that halted bus and rail services funded by federal dollars.

“Shutting down transit stations and routes is a consequence of leadership failure,” Duffy stated. “I commend President Trump for sending National Guard and Marines to end the chaos.”

He expressed concern over the city’s ability to manage transit during major upcoming events. These include the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Duffy requested a report by July 26 detailing closures, LAPD coordination with federal agencies, and public safety measures to handle future unrest. He emphasized the need for clear transit access for global event attendees.

Mayor Bass responded sharply. She criticized the federal immigration raids that sparked protests, arguing that fear—not local policy—has destabilized the city.

“If Duffy is worried about wasted funds,” she said, “he should look at the $130 million used to deploy troops into Los Angeles.”
