Saskatchewan Increases Short-Line Rail Funding by 88 Percent
27.06.2025
Saskatchewan has increased its short-line rail infrastructure funding to $1 million in 2024, representing an 88% boost aimed at supporting trade, rural growth, and export-driven transport. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The new allocation under the Short Line Railway Improvement Program (SRIP) will fund critical upgrades, including rail track improvements, crossing surface enhancements, bridge repairs, and rehabilitation of worn segments.

This initiative is part of a cost-sharing model, where Saskatchewan contributes $1 million and participating short-line operators match the amount, raising the total investment to $2 million this year.
Officials say short lines help reduce highway damage by moving bulk freight efficiently. The funding reflects Saskatchewan’s strategy to modernize infrastructure and support rural logistics networks.
Highways Minister David Marit stated that short lines offer a safe and efficient solution for transporting large volumes of goods while easing the load on the province’s roads.
Saskatchewan Commits $1M to Rail Upgrades
Saskatchewan officials emphasized that investing in short-line rail benefits not only local economies but also ensures more resilient trade corridors and logistics systems across the province.
Increased capacity and improved safety are expected outcomes as privately owned operators upgrade infrastructure through SRIP’s funding support.
Saskatchewan Short Lines to Receive Matching Funds
Because the program requires a 50-50 funding match, private short-line companies will also invest $1 million. This collaborative approach enables broader improvements and ensures shared responsibility for rail safety.
The initiative will benefit farmers, exporters, and industries reliant on affordable rail shipping while helping the province meet growing logistical demands.
