S-Bahn Hamburg upgrades trains with ETCS and ATO systems

S-Bahn Hamburg signed a contract with Alstom worth over €60 million to equip 82 BR 490 series trains with ETCS and ATO systems, enhancing transport safety and operational efficiency. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Alstom will begin modernization with four pilot trains, installing the ETCS Onvia Cab and ATO systems at its plant in Hennigsdorf.

The work is expected to be completed by 2029, after which the trains will undergo certification.
The remaining 78 trains will be retrofitted by Deutsche Bahn specialists, with Alstom providing technical support.
