Revised Rehabilitation Plan Announced for Dock Bridge
23.04.2025
The U.S. Department of Transportation has introduced a revised rehabilitation plan for the Dock Bridge, aimed at cutting costs and improving safety as part of larger Northeast Corridor rail infrastructure upgrades. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Developed in collaboration with the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak, the updated project removes non-essential features to accelerate completion and streamline expenses, cutting nearly $140 million from the original estimate.

Built in 1935, the Dock Bridge spans the Passaic River in New Jersey and supports over 700 daily passenger trains. Frequent mechanical failures have disrupted travel across this critical Amtrak bridge, triggering the need for a comprehensive redesign.

The revised plan fixes the movable span into a permanent position, increasing structural stability and reducing future breakdowns. This shift not only improves reliability but also extends the bridge’s functional life.
The project budget drops from $375 million to around $235 million, with a new completion date set nearly two years earlier. These changes reflect a practical response to aging rail infrastructure across the region.
Amtrak will oversee construction with support from federal funding through the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program.
Northeast Corridor Travelers to Benefit from Bridge Improvements
Amtrak President Roger Harris said the new strategy delivers greater efficiency and longer-term value. He emphasized that this initiative represents smart engineering and responsible use of public funds.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy added that passengers want safe, reliable trains — and this plan delivers both while saving millions in taxpayer dollars.
The Dock Bridge project is one part of a broader push to revamp New Jersey transportation infrastructure, with multiple bridge and track improvements planned across the Northeast Corridor.
