Restrictions on the operation of subway trains with intercarriage passages
01.02.2024
The technical regulations of New York impose restrictions on the operation of subway trains with intercarriage passages, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
R211T trains from Kawasaki Rail Car, operating on the A and C lines, do not comply with safety standards.
In 2024, Greenbrier plans to deliver up to 25,000 railcars
NYCT President Richard Davey announced that these trains will be limited to one line due to emergency requirements. Inspection requires a train bypass during braking, but on narrow tunnels, including the A express line, this is impossible, leading specialists to explore pathways between the cars.
It’s important to note that trains with intercarriage passages do not provide an exit from the doors of each car, which is essential for pathway checks in emergencies.
The $1.44 billion purchase from Kawasaki Rail Car in 2018 included various models of cars; however, non-compliance with technical rules imposes restrictions on their use, raising questions about the safety and efficiency of metro transportation in New York.
