Renfe Sets Passenger Record with 277 Million Trips in 2025
19.07.2025
Renfe carried 277.4 million passengers in the first half of 2025, marking a 3% increase from last year and setting a new record across its commercial and public service networks. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Demand for high-speed and long-distance services rose sharply. Over 17.9 million travelers used AVE and related routes such as Avlo and Alvia, posting a 10.9% gain compared to 2024. The busiest day came on June 20 with more than 135,600 customers.

Renfe Expands Services and Adds Modern Trains
Growth reflects improved frequency, shorter travel times, and higher capacity. Renfe deployed new S106 AVE and Avlo units, replacing some older Alvia trains to boost comfort and efficiency. This strategy drove a strong rise in commercial ridership.

Public service routes carried 259.5 million passengers, up 2.8% year-on-year. Cercanías alone handled 235.9 million journeys, an increase of 3.91%. Avant services added 139,000 more travelers, raising its total to 6.7 million trips in six months.
Renfe Launches New Fare Schemes
Spain’s fare-assistance program remains a growth driver. Since 2022, Renfe has issued over 21 million multitrip passes. In 2023, 7.1 million passes were distributed, and in 2024, that figure reached 7.7 million. By mid-2025, more than 4 million were issued.
Starting July, Renfe introduced unified monthly passes priced at €20 ($22), or €10 ($11) for youth born between 1999 and 2010. These passes allow unlimited travel across Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia networks nationwide.
The mix of service improvements and affordable ticketing continues to push Renfe toward sustained growth and reinforces its position as Spain’s leading rail operator.
