Record-breaking passenger traffic in the metro of Copenhagen in September 2024
23.10.2024
Passenger traffic in the metro of Copenhagen reached 11.2 million passengers in September 2024, a new record. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The company Metroselskabet, which manages the Copenhagen Metro, reported record passenger traffic in September 2024. During this period, the four metro lines served 11.2 million passengers, marking the highest number ever recorded.

The M3 and M4 lines alone transported 5 million passengers, setting their own record. The peak occurred on September 15, when around 400,000 passengers used the metro system. This achievement stands out, especially considering that Copenhagen’s population is around 600,000 people.
The significant increase in passenger traffic in the metro was largely driven by the opening of a new section of the M4 line. In June 2024, the southern section of this line, featuring five new stations, began operations.
How passenger traffic in the metro of Copenhagen reached record numbers in 2024
This expansion greatly improved access to the metro for the city’s residents. Now, approximately 75 percent of Copenhagen’s population lives within 600 meters of a metro or railway station. This change enhanced the convenience of public transport and boosted its popularity.
In 2023, the Copenhagen metro transported 119.7 million passengers, 11.8 million more than in 2022. This upward trend continued into 2024, indicating high demand for metro services. The Copenhagen Metro remains Denmark’s only metro system, having started its operations back in 2002. Currently, it includes four automated lines with a total of 44 stations, offering passengers a 24-hour service. This round-the-clock operation makes the metro an essential part of the city’s transport infrastructure.
In September 2024, Metroselskabet signed a contract with a consortium consisting of Ramboll, SYSTRA, and Gottlieb Paludan Architects. This contract outlines the development of the new M5 metro line, which will connect Copenhagen’s central train station to the district of Østhavnen.
Future of passenger traffic in the metro: planning the new M5 line
The new line is planned to include ten stations and will offer transfers to the existing M1, M2, and M3 lines. The project also covers the construction of a control center and depot, along with specifications for rolling stock and infrastructure.
This new line will play a key role in enhancing the city’s transport network, improving connections between different areas. Copenhagen continues to grow, and the demand for efficient transport solutions keeps rising. The M5 line is expected to greatly ease travel across the city for both residents and visitors.
