Final Survey Clears Way for New Rail Line Project

This new rail line will extend the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo corridor, expected to launch by 2027, and provide seamless access from Melli to border towns like Dentam.

Melli’s role as a gateway to southern and western Sikkim makes it an ideal junction for expanding the national railway system in this remote region.

The survey will generate detailed technical data to guide route alignment, engineering design, and cost planning before full construction begins.

Rail Line to Boost Access and Growth in Sikkim

Improved rail connectivity will support Gyalshing and surrounding communities by opening access, promoting tourism, and encouraging trade and jobs.

Officials view the line as a long-term asset that will improve economic integration and reduce travel time in hard-to-reach areas.

Local businesses and residents are likely to benefit from year-round transport access once the line is completed and linked to major national routes.

Railway authorities plan to invite tenders soon, initiating the first stage of technical work and field evaluations.

This infrastructure expansion reinforces the government’s strategy to invest in Northeast India and connect border regions more effectively.
