Upgrades Planned for Railway Line Between Surrey and West Sussex

Between February 1 and February 16, buses will replace trains between Guildford and Gatwick Airport. Engineers will install durable wheel timbers on the River Wey bridge, expected to last 30 years longer than the old materials.

Network Rail will also modernize signalling systems and install barriers at four crossings. Tree and hedge trimming along the route will further enhance safety and efficiency for train operations.

How Passengers Will Be Affected by the Closure?

Passengers will experience temporary disruptions as bus services replace trains during this period. Direct buses to Gatwick Airport and stops at all intermediate stations will be available.

Southern and Thameslink trains between London, Reigate, Redhill, and Gatwick Airport will run as scheduled. Travelers are advised to plan ahead and check alternative transport options for smoother journeys.

Network Rail’s Mark Goodall highlighted the importance of these upgrades. “This critical work ensures safer and more reliable travel, benefiting passengers in the long term,” he stated.

The railway line’s reliability will improve significantly following the upgrades. Commuters can look forward to smoother journeys and fewer disruptions once the project is completed.

This 16-day closure reflects Network Rail’s commitment to maintaining and modernizing key transport infrastructure. By addressing current challenges, the improvements ensure safer, more efficient travel in the years ahead.

Passengers should monitor updates during the closure and allow extra time for their journeys. Official information channels will provide assistance and updates for travelers throughout the project.

By investing in infrastructure upgrades now, Network Rail ensures long-term benefits for passengers and freight operations. The enhancements will deliver smoother rides and fewer delays for years to come.

This closure demonstrates the importance of sustaining the UK’s railway network. These upgrades, though temporarily disruptive, highlight the value of proactive maintenance and long-term planning.
