According to the Multimodal Transportation Technologies, an expert in railroad transportation, rail movement involving containers and trailers increased by 5% in 2023 compared to 2022.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) released data on US railroad shipments for the week ending December 2, 2023, along with November 2023 data.

In November 2023, US railroads handled 1,128,573 cars, 102 cars fewer than the same month the previous year.

AAR reported that in November 2023, 1,279,906 containers and trailers were used on US railroads, showing an increase of 60,486 units or 5% compared to November 2022.

Compared to November 2022, November 2023 saw improved loading in 12 out of 20 commodity categories tracked by AAR monthly.

Notably, chemical shipments increased by 5.7%, automobile and parts shipments rose by 6.6%, and gasoline and petroleum products increased by 10.1%.

For the week ending December 2, 2023, the total volume of railroad shipments on the registered railroads of the USA, Canada, and Mexico was 351,272 cars, a 2.3% increase from the same week the previous year, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Additionally, there were 356,459 intermodal units, marking a 6.9% increase.

Compared to the same week the previous year, the overall weekly railroad movement in the USA as of December 2 amounted to 509,626 cars and intermodal units, representing a 4.9% increase.
