Key Developments in the Rail Projects

The first project involved the restoration of the 128-kilometer Maho–Omanthai railway line. With a generous USD 91.27 million Credit Line from India, the upgraded track will improve safety, reliability, and passenger comfort. Ircon International, a prominent Indian railway company, led the restoration efforts.

Additionally, the inauguration included the commencement of a modernized signalling system spanning Maho to Anuradhapura. Funded by a USD 14.9 million grant from India, the system will optimize traffic management and operational efficiency along the route.

Strengthening Economic Growth through Rail Projects

These rail projects form part of the larger India–Sri Lanka development partnership. By improving north–south connectivity, they will facilitate faster movement of passengers and freight. This, in turn, will drive regional economic growth, enhance trade, and strengthen people-to-people connections across Sri Lanka.

These Rail Projects mark an important milestone in the ongoing development cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, ensuring a prosperous future for both nations.
