Rail passengers in the UK warned about 10-day route closure
27.07.2025
Rail passengers in the UK should prepare for travel disruption as a 10-day closure between Redhill and Tonbridge will affect services from August 16 to 25, with replacement buses operating throughout. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Network Rail confirmed the closure will renew 13 miles of high-voltage cables between Nutfield and Leigh in Kent. Crews will also reinforce the line to prevent landslips and replace aging rails for better reliability.

Lucy McAuliffe, Sussex route director, explained that completing these works in one block reduces inconvenience. She said this approach avoids months of weekend delays and limits the impact on students when schools reopen.

Rail passengers in the UK advised on alternatives
During the closure, no direct trains will run on the affected route, and buses will replace Southern services. Passengers are urged to check schedules and allow extra time for longer journeys and possible connection changes.
Work includes stabilizing an embankment near Edenbridge with a 360-metre steel wall to prevent landslips. Engineers will inspect 11 bridges and replace 200 meters of rail at Godstone to improve track safety and durability.
Rail passengers in the UK urged to plan ahead
McAuliffe stressed that while no closure comes at a perfect time, August offers the best chance to finish quickly. These upgrades aim to enhance network resilience and minimize delays caused by weather and equipment failures.
Southern advised travelers to consult official timetables online before departing. By planning early, passengers can reduce stress and adapt to these essential works designed to deliver safer and more reliable rail services in the future.
