Rail Freight: Transforming Victoria’s Logistics and Sustainability
05.12.2024
Victoria’s rail freight volume surged 51% in October 2024 compared to October 2019, a remarkable milestone. This increase in freight transportation reduced the number of truck trips on regional roads significantly. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The state’s rail network handled 390,000 tonnes of grain, container freight, and crushed rock during October 2024. This shift in freight transport methods alleviated road congestion and reduced emissions.
Investments Driving Rail Freight Growth
The Victorian government’s commitment to rail freight is underscored by a $104 million investment package. This funding will modernize rail infrastructure, improve efficiency, and support economic growth.

Key projects include a crossing loop extension and upgrades to grain terminal rail connections. Rail line-speed and axle-load improvements between Korong Vale and Manangatang are also planned.
Expanding Rail Freight Capabilities
A new grain terminal, located 15 kilometers north of Echuca at Barnes, will enhance logistics options. Additional connections at Tocumwal and Geelong will further strengthen the rail network.
The Barnes terminal will be managed by an independent grain trader, emphasizing rail’s growing importance. Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne affirmed the state’s commitment to boosting rail logistics.
Southern Shorthaul Railroad (SSR) is expanding its capacity with new broad-gauge high-capacity wagons. In August, SSR introduced 22 new wagons, marking a historic development in its 21-year history.
The company doubled its broad-gauge volume for LDC from 20 to 40 wagons in September. This increase eliminated the need for 3,400 annual truck trips, showcasing rail’s logistical superiority.
A total of 75,000 concrete sleepers have been ordered to enhance the Yelta standard gauge line. This infrastructure improvement will ensure the network’s reliability and efficiency.
Victoria’s rail freight advancements demonstrate a significant shift towards sustainable transportation solutions. The state’s proactive measures are paving the way for a more efficient logistics future.
